Golfers in Charlotte have plenty of options; in fact, they could likely play a different course every day for months on end. It can be enjoyable at times to simply practice your putting without having to leave the house. I am aware that I practice on the carpet in my living room while others use those portable putting greens. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have your own backyard putting green?
Surprisingly, if you keep it small, it’s not that difficult to do; however, keeping it requires some dedication and self-control. To build your own putting green, follow these instructions.
1. Make a decision regarding whether you or a contractor will perform the work. The latter option is more expensive, but someone else is doing the work, and you’ll get a quality outcome and a warranty.
2. Choose between using natural grass or one of the available artificial grasses. Choosing the right type of grass will depend on the local climate, amount of sun or shade, and precipitation. Keep in mind that it needs to be mowed, fertilized, and cared for. Although synthetic materials have their own advantages and disadvantages, they require significantly less work.
3. Choose a location for the green, making sure to select a higher elevation where less water will collect. The vicinity of structures, water, and trees should be avoided. Avoid being too close to public walkways or play areas. If you want to hire a contractor or buy the materials yourself, measure the area you’ve set aside for the green and calculate its square footage.
4. After getting your friends involved, you can either start using shovels or rent a bobcat. You must completely excavate the area you’ve chosen, getting rid of any trash, rocks, weeds, etc. While you’re at it, collect a sample of soil.
5. You should design your irrigation channels so that water will flow away from your green and downhill. Find out about the area, including its low points, shadows, dry spots, and sun-shiny areas. You can take care of your putting green with the help of this information.
6. Look into which grass will grow best in your soil and environmental conditions. When adding topsoil, it is essential to raise the green above the surrounding soil. For the root zone, use a sandy loam topsoil, and use a slope of about 1% for surface drainage.
7. Regularly maintain and fertilize your green space. Extremes in water usage, drought, fertilization, or even excessive mowing can harm your lawn because you are trying to maintain a delicate balance. Also, avoid using fertilizer that is similar to that used on golf courses with a professional level because it is extremely toxic and could endanger your neighbor’s cat.
Enjoy yourself and make sure to celebrate your successful completion of the task with your friends at the tee.
